First time sending goods abroad? Then here is the sentence nobody tells you until it matters: the carrier's automatic liability is calculated per kilogram, not per dirham of value. A 20 kg box of laptops and a 20 kg box of towels carry the same default protection. Cargo insurance closes that gap — and this plain-language guide explains how it works, what it costs in principle, and the mistakes new shippers make.

Why it exists
Liability ≠ valueStandard carrier liability is weight-based; insurance pays on declared value.
When to buy
At bookingCover must be in place before pickup — it cannot be added mid-journey.
Journey covered
3–7 working daysProtection spans the whole GCC road transit, pickup to signed delivery.

What transit cover actually is, in one paragraph

You tell us what your goods are worth — the declared value. A small premium is charged as a percentage of that figure. If the consignment is lost, stolen, or damaged between collection in the UAE and delivery in Saudi Arabia or the GCC, the claim is settled against the value you declared, not against a per-kilo formula. That is the entire concept. Everything else on this page is detail.

Do you actually need it?

Sometimes no, honestly. If you are sending used clothing worth a few hundred dirhams, the premium barely justifies itself and the default liability may be adequate. The calculation changes fast, though. Electronics, furniture you would grieve over, commercial stock your buyer has already paid for, anything glass or stone — for these, the premium is small next to the loss you would otherwise absorb alone.

A simple test for first-timers: imagine the worst-case WhatsApp message — "there has been an accident on the highway near the border." If your honest reaction is "annoying but fine," skip the cover. If it is a knot in your stomach, insure.

Declared-value cover

Claims settled against the value you state at booking, evidenced by invoices or fair valuations.

Whole-journey scope

Pickup in the UAE, the road leg, border handling, and final delivery are all inside the policy window.

Condition evidence

We photograph cargo at loading and advise receivers to inspect before signing — your claim's best friends.

The mistakes that sink first-time claims

Insurers do not reject claims out of malice; they reject them for gaps. These are the recurring ones we see, and every single one is avoidable.

  • Under-declaring value to save premium — a loss then pays out at the low figure you chose.
  • Self-packing fragile items badly; many policies exclude damage from inadequate packing.
  • No proof of condition before shipping — photograph everything at handover.
  • The receiver signing "received in good order" without opening cartons.
  • Reporting damage days later instead of noting it on the delivery document immediately.
  • Assuming prohibited items (cash, jewellery, documents) are covered — they are not carried at all.
Practical tip: tell your receiver in Riyadh or Jeddah, before the truck arrives, to inspect cartons at the door and write any visible damage on the delivery note itself. Two handwritten words at delivery outweigh two pages of explanation a week later.

How declared value, premium, and payout relate

Numbers depend on the goods and route, but the relationships never change. This table shows the logic every policy follows.

Booking cover with your shipment

The process rides along with your freight booking. Message us the shipment details on +971 58 936 0016 and mention you want insurance; we ask for the value and what evidences it (a purchase invoice, or a reasonable valuation for used goods). The premium appears as its own line on the quote — never buried — and payment happens with the freight charges at booking. Your policy reference arrives with the booking confirmation, before the collection team rings your bell.

One rule matters here: cover cannot be added after the truck departs. Decide at booking, not when the shipment is somewhere near the Al Batha crossing.

What a claim looks like, step by step

Suppose the worst happens. The receiver notes damage on the delivery document and photographs it. You notify us within the policy's reporting window — days, not weeks. We compile the file: booking confirmation, loading photos, the annotated delivery note, receiver photos, and the value evidence from booking. The insurer assesses and settles against your declared value, less any stated deductible. Clean files settle without drama; the mistakes listed above are what turn claims into arguments.

Throughout the standard three to seven working day road journey to Saudi Arabia and the GCC, you receive milestone updates, so if anything needs attention you hear it from us first.

"My first ever shipment — a full apartment's worth from Bur Dubai to Riyadh. They walked me through declared value in one phone call, no jargon. Nothing broke, but sleeping easy for a week was worth the premium alone."

First-time shipper, expat family

"A forklift dented one crate of our café equipment on the way to Jeddah. Because their loading photos and the delivery-note remark matched, the claim settled quickly at the value we had declared. Textbook."

Restaurant owner opening in Jeddah

"I nearly declared half the value of my consignment to Dammam to trim the cost. Their coordinator explained exactly what that would mean in a loss. I paid the proper premium and I am glad I understood the maths first."

First-shipment questions

Do weekends or holidays change anything about cover or timing?

Cover runs continuously once issued — a truck parked over a Friday is still protected. Timing is another matter: UAE and Saudi weekends differ, and Eid or Hajj periods slow border processing. We factor the calendar into your delivery estimate at booking so expectations stay realistic.

Can I insure a small or partial shipment?

Yes. Even three cartons travelling in a shared truck can carry their own declared-value policy — the premium scales with value, so small consignments cost little to protect. Many first-time shippers insure a single valuable box while leaving the rest on standard liability.

How do payment and booking work for insurance?

Insurance is a line item on your freight quote. Confirm the declared value, and the premium is paid together with your shipping charges — bank transfer or cash at booking. The policy reference comes with your booking confirmation, and cover attaches when we collect the goods.

Does insurance change how long delivery takes?

No. Insured and uninsured freight travel identically — most GCC road consignments arrive within three to seven working days. The only timing interaction is at booking: allow a few extra hours for the policy to be issued before pickup, especially on same-day collection requests.

Are there packing rules I must follow for cover to apply?

Yes, and this catches new shippers. Policies expect packing appropriate to the goods — fragile items professionally wrapped or crated, appliances secured, cartons sealed. Damage traced to clearly inadequate self-packing can be excluded. If in doubt, use our packing team and the question disappears.
